RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – R&B singer Marília Mendonça, who had charted for more than a decade, was among 48 people killed in a plane crash shortly after takeoff from a regional airport south of Brazil’s capital city.

The Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 disintegrated in mid-air soon after departing Sao Paulo’s Congonhas airport on Monday morning.

The bodies of the passengers and crew were recovered from the wreckage, which was found at the end of a runway in the neighboring city of Campinas, several kilometers (miles) south of Sao Paulo.

The victims were mostly Brazilian but included two Americans, the country’s President Michel Temer said on Monday night.

Mendonça, 26, was a winner of the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Fusion Album in 2011.

She was also a member of the band Glok Girls, who, together with Mendonça, became a sensation in Brazil after forming as high school students.
