CBC: Canada's NHS hit by cyber attack

A cyber attack has left Canada’s National Health Service (NHS) reporting a surge in patients seeking care — prompting the operation to hit back with a blanket ban on medical devices and information technology — or “blockage.”

In a statement posted Thursday, the agency said it “spent much of the afternoon researching the identity of the attack and the extent of the potential impact in all departments across the service.”

It later tweeted: “The @NHSCentral operates under “denial of service” protocols and does not share information about individual patients (even those making visits out of the ordinary) without their explicit consent.”

The cyber attack targeted Newfoundland’s provincial health system and brought services to a halt Thursday afternoon.

A local radio station reported that “hundreds of patients were turned away from clinics” in St. John’s.

In a statement, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed that some diagnostic tests were suspended amid the incidents, but said hospitals remained open.
