The alleged head of an illegal prison in western Ukraine was detained on Friday and is now facing a criminal investigation for causing a miscarriage of justice.
Authorities gave no further details on his detention, and a spokeswoman for the prosecutor general said she could not confirm media reports that he was a senior member of the far-right Right Sector.
Last year, one inmate at the prison in Kramatorsk died after guards allegedly turned a blind eye to incidents in the prisoner’s cell, including the rape of a prisoner and a stone-throwing attack on a doctor.
The Dnipro regional government, in a statement on Facebook, said it had filed an official complaint to the prosecutor general’s office against the general secretary of the prison’s security directorate for the abuse of inmates and neglect of duties.
Mikael Gorshko, the justice minister in the western Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, wrote on Facebook that the incident had caused public concern.
“The current prison conditions have not always been the law abiding right to enjoy there,” Gorshko wrote.
No one was immediately available for comment from the prison’s chief administrator, who told the website Izvestia that no specific media outlet had contacted him yet.
