Doctors Who Rushed to Nurse in NYC Dies After Crash

Ally Stutts heard the banging.

She knew where it was coming from.

Around 8 a.m. on Oct. 19, she was in her first-floor office on Jefferson Street, about as far as she could reach. She got up and turned around. And when she turned back again, the room was dark.

She had fallen down two flights. She was on the pavement.

Ms. Stutts, 50, is a nurse who specializes in pediatrics at International Children’s Hospital in Manhattan. She likes to take her children with her whenever she goes to work. A year ago, on the day after Halloween, she took them in her van to a parade in Brooklyn. As they crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, she said she could see glass from the Empire State Building.

Ms. Stutts was taken to NYU Langone Medical Center in Brooklyn and then to Bellevue Hospital Center, where she spent six days. The New York Fire Department determined the cause of the accident was a bicycle ride to the Staten Island Ferry that she had taken down a dark street with heavy traffic, where she overcorrected, spun and crashed.
