State education officials, who are training their eyes on the growing use of e-cigarettes and other gadgets, are now warning parents about a new way to use new electronic stimulants: pills.

In a report Monday, the state education department said the pills are “similar in appearance and substance to stimulants found in cigarettes, such as the Nicorette e-cigarette liquid, but have no nicotine”.

The tablets have been linked to “reported psychological and physical side effects similar to those experienced with most stimulants and are not recommended for use,” the report said. The report did not identify the substance that is being sold on internet sites, but the pharmaceutical news site STAT reported Tuesday that the pill was Gabapentin, an over-the-counter medication used for treating epilepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The report said the pills, sold as “Gabagel”, are manufactured overseas and that the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has not approved use of the medication.

Last week, the New York Times reported that a clinic in Maryland, Abagel, had stopped allowing others to buy Gabapentin through prescriptions from doctors. Abagel CEO Dan Hupy told the Times that, by selling the pills from private practice, the clinic had more control over what it sold. He also said that the clinic first sold Gabapentin through prescriptions only to three doctors in Maryland and “we have never sold to anyone outside that system”.

Gabapentin is often combined with other stimulants in pills known as Gabella or Gabapenosides. Other addictive stimulants sold under the Gabella brand name include ephedrine, diphenhydramine, phentermine and some of the other ingredients, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Hupy said that Gabagel, also sold by phone, is tested and approved by the FDA and its only side effects are drowsiness and anxiety, like what people may experience when smoking a cigarette.

Gabapentin, used for treating narcolepsy, has been linked to five death from overdoses, according to the CDC. But the pills are widely used for other conditions, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

According to the state education department, Gabapentin doesn’t dissolve and that the pill’s “important ingredient is caffeine”, the most important ingredient in Gabella. Despite the warnings, according to the report, more than 200,000 students bought Gabapentin from the internet last year.
