(CNN) — Police were responding Tuesday to reports of an active shooter at a mall in Southern California, and a woman who was apparently shot at the center was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

Social media accounts on Tuesday morning focused on a mall in the city of Carson, located about 30 miles south of Los Angeles.

One Twitter account called it a “super busy sheriff’s with evidence from SWAT,” as well as photos showing an active standoff between police and a man who was possibly shot. CNN has reached out to multiple police departments in the area.

“If you can avoid the area, please do so,” Carson City Councilwoman Lula Davis-Holmes said in a Facebook post. “Emergency dispatchers are not sure where the suspect is located.”

There is no immediate word on a possible motive for the shooting, but the department’s Facebook page offered more details:

Carson Sheriff’s Station received a call for a shooting just before 10 a.m. (11 a.m. ET) at the Fashion Mall in Carson, California, a news release from the department said. There, two female gunshot victims were located, one of whom is in critical condition and the other in stable condition. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The mall is closed, said Sgt. Dan Marshall with the Carson Sheriff’s Station.

Earlier, KABC reported it could be a hostage situation.

‘Assassinate the President’

Another Twitter account, @chcop22, said a woman is bleeding from her neck and “may have been shot in the mall” in the old Carson Square, a “mall abandoned years ago. Been vacant for years.”

A tweet said police are on scene.

According to the city’s website, the mall was built in 1956 and closed in 2005. The building has been an “ice rink, sports facility, park and indoor center with an African-American teen center and auditorium.” The building has been partially renovated several times.

After the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, the city entered an “economic depression” and new businesses moved out of Carson. Some social media posts Tuesday indicated the mall was back open.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department shared details via Twitter:

“#LASD investigating active incident in #Carson. At this time multiple victims shot. Outstanding public safety personnel on scene @SBCOUNTYSHERIFF #lawenforcement.”

Hours earlier, a heavily armed man was reported at a Texas shopping mall, but he was not found and the incident did not result in a shooting. The man was reported in the food court of the Fashion Outlets of San Antonio, police said.

The mall was evacuated, and police are “asking guests not to come to the mall for the remainder of the day,” according to a statement from police.
