Recognising the triggers for infection: an antidote to Käus Gerhard

Cultural projects to increase public knowledge about the disease are being curated around some of Germany’s most popular fairs, writes Walter Bavnon.

The Fourth Covid Wave Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary. From April 12 to 15 it is transforming the northern state of Lower Saxony’s pavilion of fairs in Mainz into a space for the surveillance and dissemination of information on highly contagious diseases, such as rotavirus, norovirus and H1N1. Here are the key dates:

1 April The information walks, outreach events and talks organised by the event promoters will start

to take place. They will continue over the full duration of the festival

2 April A focus group discussion on the theme “Covid Wave-The Other Side of infection” will be held in Mainz.

3 April Public information leaflets on important symptoms will be distributed

at the four weekend fairs taking place in Mainz, Egberg, Hanover and

Aubergad.

4 April A volunteer cooperation festival for festivalgoers sponsored by the society Bahlassemut will take place in Mainz.

5 April Pamphlets, “carvings”, information cards and educational videos will be posted outside visitors’ shelters, supermarkets and bus stops.

6 April The Berlin-based journalist Danieli Fischer is traveling around Germany with a temporary “Vaxewarm” vaccination clinic, which is capable of accommodating up to 60 people. It will also record live presentations on how to deal with infectious diseases.

7 April The public assistance “Bayreuth Klasse” shelter in the northern city of Mainz is offering a free fall vaccination campaign.

8 April The Hamburg-based organization Bernhard Hoye S.A.S. is organising the “Miracle in Hamburg – Solutions for Infectious Diseases”, a four-week series of talks and seminars sponsored by Hamburg’s Department of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Regulation.

9 April Warnenhaus dimassen: Geld nach einem Kinderbahn am Main (AUB) shop will also sell a vaccine for Hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera and Hepatitis C, among others.

11 April The large exhibition of 24 minutemen by the artist George Kuenzel will open at Mainz’s suburban museum. They were recruited by Kuenzel to distribute leaflets explaining vaccination and disease prevention in a festive and cultural environment. The minutemen will also be guided through the festival.

12 April The Kassel-based venture A Barcha will support Schlachtätze der höchste Schuppenfahrt GmbH in Mainz.

13 April A number of institutions in Mainz will be holding information meetings on disease prevention and vaccination for fair-goers.
